Non-Destructive testing of abrasives

Description

In industries where precision and reliability are critical, the quality of abrasive products like grinding wheels and honing stones plays a crucial role. Destructive testing methods such as 3/4-point bending or ball pressure testing require the use of material samples for testing. Unlike these destructive tests, the RFDA method offers non-destructive testing of abrasives based on vibrational testing, allowing repeated tests on a single product or enabling fast and efficient 100% quality control testing without damaging the product. The RFDA method allows manufacturers to assess the integrity and structural properties of abrasive materials and products in order to grade and/or class each individual product. This method provides key insights into the product helping to prevent potential failures during use. For each resonant frequency the RFDA provides information on the Loss rate and damping. Damping values represents the internal friction or energy dissipation during vibration or impact of the specimen. An indispensable property providing important additional information on material performance, especially in damage-related processes where defects such as cracks may lead to unusually high damping factors.

RFDA instruments are even suitable to measure porous abrasive products where only very small strains are involved.

Explore how RFDA is redefining the standard for quality control in the abrasive products industry.
